What Is a GIC for Canada?
A Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) is a Canadian bank investment that guarantees your deposited funds will be returned with interest over a set period. For immigration purposes, a GIC serves as proof of financial support — showing IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) that you have enough funds to support yourself during your studies in Canada.
The GIC is purchased from a IRCC-approved Canadian financial institution before arriving in Canada. Once you arrive, the funds are released to you in monthly instalments to cover living expenses.
Who Needs a GIC for Canada?
The GIC is required for students applying under the Student Direct Stream (SDS) — a faster visa processing track available to students from India, China, Philippines, Vietnam and several other countries.
- SDS applicants (recommended): GIC is mandatory. Processing time is 20 days vs 60+ days under the regular stream.
- Regular stream applicants: GIC is not mandatory, but you must show equivalent funds through bank statements (6 months) or an education loan sanction letter.

How to Open a GIC — Step by Step
Choose a GIC Provider
Select from the IRCC-approved list above. CIBC is most popular with Indian students for speed and ease.
Apply Online from India
All providers allow online account opening from India before you arrive. You'll need your passport, admission letter and personal details.
Transfer CAD 20,635 from India
Remit the GIC amount from India via your bank or forex provider. This can come from your education loan (StudyCapital arranges the remittance directly).
Receive GIC Certificate
Once funds are received and verified, the bank issues a GIC certificate (usually within 2–5 business days). This certificate goes into your study permit application.
Include in Visa Application
Upload the GIC certificate in your IRCC study permit application as proof of financial support.
Activate on Arrival in Canada
Once you land in Canada, activate your GIC account at the bank. Funds are released in monthly instalments (approx. CAD 1,720/month) to your Canadian bank account.
Can I Include GIC in My Education Loan?
Yes. The GIC amount (CAD 20,635 ≈ ₹12.8–13.5 lakhs) can be included as part of your total education loan amount when applying through StudyCapital. We coordinate the remittance directly from your loan to the Canadian bank — so you don't need to arrange funds separately.

Total Recommended Loan: ₹48–68 Lakhs
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. The GIC is your money — it's released to you in monthly instalments after you arrive in Canada (approx. CAD 1,720/month). You also earn a small amount of interest on the GIC. The full amount is released over approximately 12 months.
For the regular stream (not SDS), a loan sanction letter can substitute for the GIC. However, for SDS — which gives you 20-day visa processing — the GIC is mandatory. We recommend always doing SDS + GIC for faster, smoother visa processing.
From starting the application to receiving the GIC certificate: typically 7–14 days, including 2–5 days for the bank to process after receiving funds. CIBC is currently the fastest. StudyCapital helps you start this process in parallel with your loan application to save time.
If your Canadian study permit is rejected, you can request a full refund of your GIC from the bank. The refund process typically takes 4–8 weeks. Most banks process this without issue — the GIC is always your own money.
